PERSONALITY: Aya Brea's life is a hell of a ride.

At the root, Aya believes, basically, in the power of kindness - that caring about someone is the most human thing you can do. Being considered human is something of a goal of hers, considering everything she's been through.

While she believes in the power of kindness and humanity, Aya has no problems being tough when it comes down to it. Whether it's pushing her date out of harms way with a shoulder check, risking her life for a friend's child, or trying to save the scientist who's been trying to kill her the entire game, she's willing to do what she must to keep people safe. This and her decision to be a police officer could be tied back to her loss as a young child - her mother and twin sister died in a car accident, and she lost her father after that. If she can keep people safe and families together, then she's doing what she believes is best.

This extends to when she encounters a clone of herself in a shadow facility. When she meets the clone Eve, who has been tortured with terrible visuals and experimented on, she immediately hugs her and calms her down. Despite what Eve and her DNA has caused, she doesn't judge the child - even stopping her partner, Kyle, from shooting her. In later installments of Parasite Eve, it's even shown she ends up adopting her.

However, even if she is kind that does not mean she cannot hold a grudge. The six-day siege of New York by Mitochondrial Eve causes her to hate the mitochondria within her body, even if they are what kept her safe. She tries not to use her powers because she can see it scares people, and she says that she wishes she could age normally rather than living in eternal youth. While some may consider her power a blessing, she views it almost as a curse, and does her best not to rely on it, to the point that the in-game explanation in Parasite Eve 2 for unlocking her powers is that they've fallen into disuse.

Despite what her body has become and the fact that she doesn't want it, she uses the powers she does have to keep people safe. She chases Mitochondrial Eve's mutations west across the country, giving up her job as a police officer to join the Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team with the FBI.

Although she's desperate to remain and be considered human, she seems to forget that personal connections are necessary to do so. While she doesn't become misanthropic like Dr. Klamp or homicidal like Eve, she seems to cut contact with her old partner, Ben, and the scientist who helped her in New York, Maeda. Although her MIST team members are people she cares for, and Jodie, Rupert and Pierce do their best to get close to her, she keeps them at arms length. When she talks of nightmares about her sister, it surprises Jodie and Pierce when she does it.

The fact that her mitochondria make so her strong is also what makes her weak. Fearing Eve's warning that using them will make her like Eve, she tries to avoid doing so - when, arguably, learning to master the power she has would be the smarter choice. Indeed, there's even a scene in the game where her mitochondria are shown helping her cells, not corrupting them. (The non-canon EX game, however, implies that her mitochondria are not advanced enough to take over the cells, and that if they did it would be her sister's spirit and Aya's will that keep her from losing to them. That does make her fear somewhat founded.)

Aya also seems to take the weight of the world on her shoulders, taking responsibility for things out of her control. She takes her fight with Mitochondrial Eve very personally, considering the reason they both are the way they are is because of her twin sister's organs, and because she is attacking Aya's home - first her city, then her precinct and family. When she encounters the artificial mitochondrial creatures, and then discovers they have been created from her DNA, she declares it her responsibility to eradicate them. It is not as if Aya handed over a DNA sample to the shadow organization that made them - but because it has caused people to suffer (the Golems in the game are made from soldiers) she is determined to 'fix' the problem.

She cares strongly about being kind and being human, considering she can no longer be called one. She is determined to protect the human race from the dangers that Maya and Mitochondrial Eve caused, and then that her own DNA has caused. Her tendency to take the weight of the world on her shoulders and isolate herself makes her a hard person to get close to, but she celebrates those connections that she has - especially now that she realizes they are so important.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Aya is possessed of mitochondria that are evolved further than humans', and can think as one instead of operating independently (... don't ask). Due to this, she has gained some superhuman powers.

She apparently no longer ages, and when she's injured she can either heal quicker than a normal human or, using her powers, nearly instantly. It doesn't make her any tougher physically, and while she's a tad stronger than her size indicates it's not anything noticeable.

She can also generate bursts of flame or electricity by manipulating her mitochondria, which can then cause damage to skin, body fat, cause temporary paralysis, or even necrotize things like vital organs or bone cells at extreme levels.

She can also (though this is mostly a "if she uses her powers enough" and not something she can currently access) change into a "mitochondrial form" capable of causing massive damage, but this leaves her drained and dizzy.

This is self-limited by her desire to not be seen as "inhuman" and so she uses her powers as minimally as possible. On top of that, all her powers deal with manipulating or sacrificing mitochondria for energy - so she's limited by what her body has to spare. Completely exhausting her extra mitochondria' means she needs to eat quite a bit and rest to fully restore it.
